Sony A7 IV: a balanced full-frame camera for stills and video

Photographers who need one camera for several jobs will find the Sony A7 IV suited to portraits, weddings, reportage, travel, occasional wildlife and video. Its 33MP full-frame sensor provides more cropping freedom than a 24MP body without creating the storage load of a very high-resolution model. 33MP: cropping room without an extreme file burden

In practical use, 33MP matters when framing needs to be tightened after capture. A wedding photographer can refine a composition, a portrait shooter can deliver several aspect ratios and a reporter can recover a smaller detail without reducing the final file too quickly. The same resolution is useful for landscapes, architecture and product work. It does ask more of lenses and storage than a lower-resolution body, so the benefit comes from the overall balance rather than the headline number alone.

Autofocus: strong results start with the right AF area

Eye AF recognises people, animals and birds, reducing the need to move the focus point manually as a subject changes position. The advantage is most obvious in portraits and weddings at wide apertures, where depth of field leaves little room for error. For wildlife, eye detection helps when the subject is sufficiently visible, although the 10fps burst places the A7 IV behind specialised action bodies. A wide tracking area works well with an isolated subject; a smaller zone is usually safer when several people or distracting elements cross the frame.

4K video: choose between full-frame coverage and frame rate

4K 30p uses an oversampled full-frame readout from roughly 7K, making it the natural setting for interviews, weddings, documentary work and product video when detail and the original lens angle of view matter. 4K 60p produces smoother motion and moderate slow motion, but it locks the camera to Super 35 capture, so a 24mm lens frames more tightly. Internal 4:2:2 10-bit recording provides more room for colour correction, provided the editing software and workstation can handle the chosen codec.

Body only: build the system around the work

This product is the camera body without a lens. If you already use Sony E-mount glass, it preserves the freedom to select the focal length that fits the assignment. Memory cards, battery and backup workflow

Slot one accepts either CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD media; slot two accepts UHS-II SD. A capable SD card covers many stills and movie settings, while CFexpress Type A becomes relevant when frame rate, data rate or burst depth demands it. The NP-FZ100 battery can be charged in the camera, and USB-C Power Delivery supports longer sessions with a compatible source. For paid work, recording to two cards is only one layer of protection: files should still be copied to a separate device after capture.

Sony A7 IV or A7 V: where does the step up matter?

Sony's newer A7 V keeps a 33MP resolution but adds a partially stacked sensor, an integrated AI processing unit and much faster readout. It reaches 30fps with blackout-free viewing and records 4K 120p. By comparison, the A7 IV is more measured: 10fps, human/animal/bird recognition and Super 35 4K 60p. For portraits, weddings, reportage and routine hybrid production, that foundation remains coherent. The newer body has the clearer advantage when fast sport, demanding wildlife, high-frame-rate video or the latest subject-recognition system sits at the centre of the brief.

Limitations to understand before choosing

The first limitation is the Super 35 crop in 4K 60p, which changes the angle of view and may require a wider lens. The second is the 10fps burst: useful for many assignments, but less suited to very fast sport sequences. The 1.04-million-dot rear screen is practical without being especially detailed by current standards. Finally, the A7 IV lacks the AI unit and faster-reading sensor found in the A7 V. None of these points prevents excellent results; they simply identify the situations in which a more specialised body makes sense.
