Which Sony A7R VI kit should you choose?

A useful kit starts with the subjects you photograph, not with the longest specification list. We reviewed the fifteen active options and grouped them by the job each lens is best placed to do.

Start with the lens you will actually use

The A7R VI records 66.8MP files, commonly rounded to 67MP, so there is room to crop. Cropping is useful, but it is not a substitute for choosing the right lens. Turning every 70mm frame into a telephoto image discards resolution; carrying a 200-600mm on a city trip creates the opposite problem.

Look at your existing images and note the focal lengths that appear most often. A 20-70mm or 24-105mm is a sensible one-lens starting point. An F2 or F2.8 zoom becomes more relevant in lower light, around moving subjects or when stronger background separation matters. A prime lens makes sense when you are happy to move your position in exchange for a wider aperture and a more specific rendering.

Body only or a Sony FE lens kit?

The Sony A7R VI body is the straightforward choice if you already own suitable full-frame E-mount lenses or want to build a very deliberate set. A kit removes one purchasing decision and gives the camera a clear purpose from day one. That only helps when the included lens matches your work; an impressive lens that stays at home adds little value.

Landscape, travel and video configurations

For broad landscapes, confined interiors and architecture, start with the 12-24mm and 16-35mm kits. The 12-24mm reaches a distinctly wider field of view. The 16-35mm is less specialised and meets a standard zoom more naturally.

For travel, many photographers will decide between the 20-70mm F4 G and 24-105mm F4 G OSS. The 20-70mm makes room at the wide end; the 24-105mm reaches further for portraits and details. Video buyers should also consider balance on their support, the need for a constant aperture and the shots they make most often. The camera's recording modes remain the same across the kits, but the lens changes framing, focus behaviour and movement.

Portrait and event lenses: F1.4, F2 or F2.8?

The 85mm F1.4 GM II is designed around tighter portraits and available-light work. The 35mm F1.4 GM keeps the surroundings visible and suits close documentary coverage. A 24-70mm F2.8 GM II handles changing distances without switching lenses. The 28-70mm F2 GM gains a stop over an F2.8 zoom, but starts at 28mm and asks you to accept a larger setup.

The 50-150mm F2 GM bridges portrait focal lengths and indoor stage or sport work. The 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II extends the range, while the 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II trades one stop for a different size and close-focusing proposition. Room to move, subject distance and carrying time usually settle this choice faster than a headline specification.

Macro, sport and wildlife require different working distances

The 100mm F2.8 Macro GM kit is the focused option for small subjects, products and close detail. For action or wildlife, distance is the deciding factor. A 100-400mm adapts more easily when subjects approach. A 200-600mm is more specialised and better suited to birds or wildlife that remain far away. The high-resolution sensor helps with a final crop, but sufficient focal length preserves more detail and makes the subject easier to follow in the viewfinder.

Sony A7R VI or Sony A7R V?

The Sony A7R V remains relevant for high-resolution work centred on controlled or slower subjects. The A7R VI introduces a fully stacked sensor, faster readout and continuous shooting at up to 30fps with AF/AE tracking. The practical question is therefore not resolution alone, but whether you need the extra speed, tracking and video capability. A landscape photographer working from a tripod will weigh the difference differently from a wedding, bird or hybrid shooter.
