Canon advances its RF hybrid mount with the introduction of a range of APS-C sensors. Wildlife photographers were eagerly awaiting the EOS R7, the next model in the R series and replacement for Canon's 7D Mark II DSLR, which shows its ambitions.

The RF mount from Canon has long been established in mirrorless cameras and offers a wide variety of devices with a full-frame sensor and lenses.

However, something was missing for APS-C sensor enthusiasts. There is, of course, the EF-M mount, but the cameras are rather modest, and the number of lenses is extremely limited.

We thought that, given Canon's background in APS-C sensors, the company would eventually create cameras using the RF mount that converts 1.6x (compared to full-frame) and uses an APS-C sensor.

The Japanese company then releases the EOS R7 and EOS R10, both smaller than their predecessors.

The latter is intended for an audience looking to improve their photographic skills using a camera like the EOS 250D or 850D.

Canon EOS R7: An APS-C hybrid for wildlife photography

The EOS R7 is aimed at a more knowledgeable audience, such as wildlife photographers, promising to be the successor to the highly appreciated yet aging EOS 7D Mark II, a very fast DSLR in its time.

While adopting the codes of the EOS R5 and EOS R6, the EOS R7 distinguishes itself by two apparent modifications: a focus button placed immediately on the front, similar to what is seen on Fujifilm cameras, and a rather unusual joystick.

Canon has acquired a reputation for being the benchmark brand for unusual AF controls. The company is still figuring out how to navigate between the touchpad and the eye adjustment.

This time, the joystick has been moved to the right of the viewfinder, along with a selection wheel.

Canon R7: A unique joystick

The EOS R7 features a control dial next to the screen on a ball joint, making it a tiny body with a wide array of controls.

Regarding the user's external trick, note that there is also a dual slot for UHS-II SD cards, as well as the same multifunction shoe as the EOS R3 (which allows digital microphones or traditional ports: micro-HDMI, microphone, headphone jack, and USB-C).

The electronic viewfinder, on the other hand, only has a resolution of 2.36 million dots, which is well below the current standard.

The device also features several weather seals and a magnesium chassis for good shock and weather resistance.

The EOS R7 body weighs 612 g and measures 13 x 9.2 x 9.2 cm when fully assembled.

Obviously, the most remarkable aspect of the beast is what it contains.

Indeed, this R7 is equipped with a 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor (100 to 51,200 ISO), identical to that of the EOS 90D and M6 Mark II, according to Canon, but the development of the sensitive cell has been completely redesigned.

It also offers five-axis mechanical stabilization, which is unique to this model on a Canon APS-C camera for the first time.

It is useful for shooting with fixed focal lengths without stabilization, as it allows you to stabilize the horizon as needed.

Our opinion on the Canon EOS R7

Canon's revolutionary project to launch the EOS R7 opens a new path for its range of mirrorless cameras. These features are now combined with the cardinal advantages of mirrorless cameras, such as faster shooting speeds, faster sensor readout speeds, improved focusing capabilities, and, of course, an intelligent EVF screen.

The image quality of the EOS R7 is impressive, thanks to Canon's use of cutting-edge technologies throughout its design, from the DIGIC X processor to the extremely accurate Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system. You also have access to excellent focusing, tenacious tracking, and deep learning subject identification, as well as incredibly effective image stabilization that produces clear photos and smoother videos in any lighting situation.

The R7's video capabilities are designed to meet the needs of advanced hybrid photographers as well as vloggers and solo filmmakers, with the inclusion of Canon Log 3 and a variety of recording formats, including oversampled 4K/30p. To ensure this body offers flagship features for all types of creators, Canon has added enviable computational photography functions such as automatic horizon correction, panorama mode, pre-shooting mode, and Dual Pixel RAW processing. The R7 is the camera you've been waiting for, whether you're a DSLR user transitioning to mirrorless or a current mirrorless user looking to upgrade. It is also ideal for users who wish to use virtually any lens from the Canon arsenal on other devices.
