Focus performance still depends on the camera, selected subject recognition, AF area, available light and shutter speed. At F1.4, accurate focus cannot rescue movement blur caused by an exposure that is too slow.

The aperture ring, AF/MF switch and customisable button reduce menu visits. Clicked aperture steps are reassuring during stills work; switching the ring to a smooth action makes gradual video adjustments easier. Linear Response manual focus gives the ring a more predictable reaction when you need to place focus yourself.

Video: a natural perspective, with stabilisation supplied by the camera

The 35mm view suits location interviews, documentary sequences, travel films and moving shots that need to show both subject and place. It is wide enough to establish context while keeping a face readable. Quiet autofocus and a de-clickable aperture ring are useful when sound is being recorded close to the camera.

There is no optical OSS stabilisation in the lens. A compatible Sony body can stabilise its sensor, but that does not replace controlled movement or support when the shot calls for it. Handheld results still depend on posture, camera settings and how the operator moves. For a long walking shot or a sequence that needs constant reframing, a zoom or external stabiliser may be the more practical tool.

Which aperture should you use on a 35mm F1.4 lens?

Close focusing, 524g handling and APS-C use

Minimum focus is 0.27m with autofocus and 0.25m in manual focus, with respective maximum magnification of 0.23x and 0.26x. This is not a macro lens, but it can record table details, food, textures or an artisan's hands without interrupting an assignment to change lenses.

At 524g and 96mm long, the 35 GM is restrained for a premium F1.4 prime but not as discreet as the FE 35mm F1.8 or FE 40mm F2.5 G. On an APS-C Sony body, its angle of view is equivalent to about 52.5mm on full frame. It becomes a fast standard lens rather than a moderate wide angle, useful for everyday pictures and portraits but harder to justify if minimum size is the priority.
