Insects and close subjects that will not stay still

A 100mm macro lens allows you to work close without approaching an insect as aggressively as a shorter focal length may require. Two XA elements, two ED elements, a floating focus system and Nano AR Coating II are part of the lens's optical construction. In practice, the key creative decision remains where to place sharpness: at 1.4x, that choice changes the entire image.

Portraits and video, in their proper place

Focusing and stabilisation at close range

The focus clutch reveals a distance and magnification scale, useful when manual focus is the clearer choice on a highly textured subject. The focus limiter can also prevent the lens from searching through an unnecessary portion of its focus range.

Close-up-optimised OSS is meaningful assistance, not a substitute for technique. As magnification increases, a stable stance, careful camera placement and a deliberate focal plane become increasingly important.

Teleconverters: greater magnification, greater discipline

The FE 100mm Macro GM is compatible with Sony's SEL14TC and SEL20TC teleconverters. With the optional SEL20TC, Sony specifies up to 2.8x magnification. That creates an option for details that still feel too small at 1.4x, but it is not the easy setting for every subject.

At these ratios, depth of field is exceptionally thin and vibration becomes more visible. Plan for more light, solid support and a more methodical approach to focus. A teleconverter extends the lens's possibilities; it does not remove macro's demands.
